Many years ago I read and article about ways in which Microsoft fostered innovation. The story explained that once per year Bill Gates would steal away to a private island location and work for days on ideas that Microsoft employees had submitted to help improve the company. The story explained that people would wait until the wee hours of the morning to see if there was any response to their idea.
I started doing this shortly after reading this article. I "disappear" a few times per year. I go to a place and spend time alone working on the future of HighGrove and KnowWater. It is some of the best and most creative time I have. It has become a necessity for me as it is difficult to have great comprehensive thought amidst the daily existence we all live. I have had some great ideas on a Lacrosse field, but my boys are not happy when I am not focused on their efforts.
One of my favorite places to do this is the Madison Valley Ranch in Montana. It is such wonderful place and perfect for this type of escape. The lodge manager, Elizabeth, used
to be confused as to why I only wanted to fish a couple of times in the week but she understands now what my mission is. Here is a clip from a recent television show filmed there. I am sure you can see why it is a great place to be.
Have the courage to "disappear" for your company. It is one of the best gifts you can give it and your team.
