Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall
As we close the curtains on summer we begin to prepare for our more cooler seasons.
This is the time of year many commercial properties tend to fall to the wayside. It’s quite easy to let things go when the weather isn’t so bright and perky as our summer months.
However, don’t let your property fall into the trend. Our floriculture designer,Phillip Johnson, talks annual color, how to stretch your budget and color pairing for your property this season.
What are the best annuals for winter?
The best annual color for our fall/winter season are definitely pansies and violas. These two will give your landscape a constant bloom all season. If you are looking for something with a little texture I would highly recommend kales and cabbages. To go even further, consider adding some height with snapdragons and dianthus.
Small budget, big vision. How can we stretch our dollars?
The best solution for a big impact with a limited budget would be more pansies/violas in stop the car colors. The bold yellows, blues and purples are sure to leave your visitors impressed. Additional interest could include dusty miller which is at an even lower price point.
What are the best coloring pairings for fall?
I like to see beds with contrasting colors as opposed to like colors. The hot pink of dianthus with yellow, orange, and purple pansies make for a nice color display.
When is the best time to start planting?
The weather plays a deciding role in when we generally start our fall installs. Most typical seasons will allow a planting time starting early to mid-October. Once installs start we try to have them wrapped up before Thanksgiving.
How would you enhance a property in the winter?
Nothing says enhancement like adding a container. They come in a range of styles, colors and sizes. They’re a fast way to update and add color to entrances and other high-visibility spaces. It’s a great enhancement without investing in replanting your entire bed.
