LEED-callaway-gardensJust one hour southwest of Atlanta in Pine Mountain, Ga., nestled in the southernmost foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and situated next to the gorgeous Lake Robin, is a 13,000-acre resort called the Lodge & Spa at Callaway Gardens.

The rustic lodge features 150 guest rooms and suites accented with original artwork and crackling outdoor fireplaces, as well as a 13,000-square-foot spa with massage and hydrotherapy treatment rooms that was named one of the Top 10 U.S. Green Spas by Organic Spa Magazine, in addition to a fully equipped health club with a yoga and exercise studio and a retail and salon boutique. Golf Digest and Tennis Magazine consider the Mountain View Golf Course and the Tennis Center as one of the nation’s top-rated courses and courts. And the Cecil B. Day Butterfly garden on the property is open year-round.

Need more of a business retreat? Executives can enjoy the Lodge’s 20,000 square feet of conference facilities.

And the best amenity of all? The Lodge at Callaway Gardens is green. In fact it’s the first conference center in the southeastern United States to gain LEED certification. This honor, awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council, measures the property’s water efficiency, energy, resources and environmental quality, in addition to innovation and design.

Whether attracting a vacationing couple seeking luxury or executives in need of a corporate retreat, an enjoyable — and sustainable — adventure can be had at The Lodge at Callaway Gardens.

Callaway’s Commitment to LEED Certification

LEED-callaway-gardensWhen the Lodge at Callaway Gardens announced its debut after a $30 million investment in 2007, Callaway Gardens President Robert McEleney said, “When it came to designing The Lodge & Spa at Callaway Gardens, we took on the challenge to honor the work that nature had already done. With this in mind, we created a LEED-certified resort lodging amenity that continues the sense of place that is so central to everything at Callaway Gardens.”

In living up to this promise, each guest room features all-natural bath products that emit from refillable dispensers, saving nearly 200,000 plastic containers a year. At the Lodge’s Spa Prunifolia, nature-inspired treatments include Naturopathica massages and facials infused with herbs, fruits, flowers and plants grown and extracted from the soil and trees at Callaway Gardens. Additionally, most of the fruit and vegetables are grown in property and The Gardens restaurant is entirely devoted to the Slow Foods concept, which seeks to encourage the enjoyment of regional produce and traditional foods that are often grown organically.

LEED Certification — With HighGrove’s Help

Callaway Gardens first opened its doors in 1952. And since 1998, HighGrove Partners has helped Callaway Gardens in multiple master planning efforts, including the Lodge & Spa, which with its LEED certification builds on this environmentally responsible heritage.

From the Callaway Gardens Master Plan to the conceptual Lodge & Spa site design to the non-potable irrigation solutions, as well as construction documentation, LEED documentation for certification, LEED certification commissioning and construction administration duties, HighGrove has been honored to be a part of aiding Callaway Gardens in its sustainability efforts.

We designed the landscape here with the intent to disturb as little land as possible, keeping conservation awareness top-of-mind throughout the entire process. Landscapes were designed using the most indigenous species, including longleaf pines and native azaleas. In fact, each spring, Callaway Gardens’ landscape is a sight to behold, exploding with 20,000 bright and blooming azaleas.
